It's official: Wicked is coming to the big screen. Fans of the long-running Broadway musical will be excited to learn that a movie adaptation of the very popular (get it?) show is finally in the works, with a release date set for Dec. 20, 2019.

But what exactly can we expect when the Tony-winning stage production that tells the real story about the Wicked Witch of the West hits theaters? Something quite amazing, if the big names already involved with the project are any indication. Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry will direct the film, and it will be produced by Marc Platt, who worked on bringing the musical Into the Woods to movie form. Composer Stephen Schwartz and book writer Winnie Holzman—who adapted Wicked from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel of the same name for Broadway—will write the film's screenplay.

And while there's no word on any cast selections quite yet, our fingers are crossed for Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, who originally starred in Wicked on the Great White Way as the title characters Glinda and Elphaba, to make a triumphant return.

We don't know about you, but our excitement for the upcoming Wicked movie certainly defies gravity.
