London-based designer Orla Kiely has the purrrfect solution to brighten up a rainy day—or any day, in fact! Known for her quirky prints and retro-inspired styles loved by celebs Lena Dunham and Zooey Deschanel, the Dublin-native (who is no stranger to frequent downpours) debuted her fall 2014 collection earlier this year and it was filled with playful animal-motif printed blouses, sweaters, dresses, skirts, and plenty of cold-weather accessories.
Taking cue from days that have rained cats and dogs in Ireland, Kiely’s inspo was a nod to the ’60s—from classic film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg to the feminine style of singers such as Petula Clark, Cilla Black, and Sandie Shaw. Shown at the old Central Saint Martins building on Southampton Row in London, the collection sparked quite a feline frenzy. “The set was built to look like a cozy winter day with a rain puddle projected floor around park benches, red telephone boxes and lampposts,” Kiely tells InStyle. To add to the storied presentation, the melodic soundtrack of rain rumbles and meowing cats was perfectly in sync with the theme. “There was also included a live rendition of a slowed-down version of the musical, Singin’ in the Rain. It was super cute,” she says.
