There must be something in the water in Barrangquilla, Colombia. The Latin American town that brought us the beautiful Sofia Vergara is also the hometown of the new Miss Universe, Paulina Vega. At Florida International University in Miami on Sunday night, Vega was awarded the crown by the reigning Miss Universe, Gabriela Isler of Venezuela. She beat out first runner-up Miss USA Nia Sanchez and second runner-up Miss Ukraine Diana Harkusha.
But having the same hometown as Vergara isn't the only thing Vega has going for her—the 22-year-old, who has been modeling since she was eight, studies business administration at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogota and speaks Spanish, English, and a bit of French. And as if that weren't enough, she scored the highest possible score during the Miss Colombia pageant, a 9.9. Talk about an overachiever!
"It will be a dream come true to represent the woman of today," Vega said to the Associated Press last week. "A woman that not only cares about being beautiful and being glamorous, but also cares about being a professional, intelligent, hard-working person." Tiaras off to that.
