Tom Ford is giving us his two cents on Rihanna’s penchant for showing off her best assets! In a recent blog post penned by the designer on his website, Ford discusses the controversy over his provocative spring 2015 collection and reveals how it relates to contemporary fashion, citing Rihanna and Miley Cyrus as women he envisions wearing his creations.
Inspired by several glamorous icons of the past, including Greta Garbo in the film Mata Hari, Ursula Andress, and Charlotte Rampling—and with a final nudge from Victoria Beckham—the designer's most recent collection looks back into his own archive of work from the late 1990s. Ford states that the pasties featured on several of the runway looks were references to the past, but also a deliberate nod to "very young women who have the bodies to pull it off and that is actual pasties as in the case of Miley Cyrus or even a dress that leaves nothing at all to the imagination as worn by Rihanna to the CFDA Awards in New York this past summer."
He continues on to pay tribute to Rihanna in her infamous "naked dress" designed by Adam Selman that covered the singer in little more than thousands of Swarovski crystals. "I was at the CFDA Awards as I was receiving a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' [which I prefer to think of as a 'Mid Life Achievement Award'], and I have to say that Rihanna was for me, that night, one of the most beautiful women that I have ever beheld," Ford says. "I had designed several things for her specifically for that evening which she did not wear, but when I saw her it did not matter. I whispered into her ear that she was right not to have worn one of my dresses that night because she looked more beautiful than I have ever seen her look. She was stunning. As Richard said plainly after the evening, 'If you are as beautiful as Rihanna, you almost owe it to the world to appear in public almost nude' and I have to say that I wholeheartedly concur."
Clearly, both Cyrus and Rihanna are just as big of fans of the designer as he is of them—each of the stars donned looks from the collection in question at last week's amfAR Inspiration Gala where Ford was honored—and each of them looked incredible.
