Fans of Top Gun have been eagerly awaiting a sequel since Tom Cruise first blew them away as Maverick 30 years ago, and now it seems we finally have lift off on the project.
Following years of speculation, Top Gun's sequel was announced last June, but a new photo of Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirms work on the movie is finally underway.
Bruckheimer posted a photo of himself and Cruise to Twitter and wrote alongside it: "Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2."
Val Kilmer is set to reprise his role as Iceman, but Kelly McGillis's role as Charlie is so far unconfirmed for the follow-up.
As for the plot for the second movie, Skydance CEO David Ellison told Collider last year, "There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick."
"It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters ... It's really exploring the end of an era of dog fighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today."
Our eyes are peeled for shots of Cruise and Kilmer back on set.
