The Emerald City is in sight for the cast of The Wiz Live!
NBC recently released key art for their next live-action musical: a reimagination of The Wiz, the 1970s hit that retells the story The Wizard of Oz and features an all-black cast.
The new art showcases a taste of the production's all-star cast, including 18-year-old newcomer Shanice Williams as Dorothy, David Alan Grier as the Cowardly Lion, R&B star Ne-Yo as the Tin Man, and Elijah Kelley (of Hairspray fame) as the Scarecrow (above).
The Wiz Live! follows the success of NBC's previous live musicals, 2013's The Sound of Music with Carrie Underwood and last year's production of Peter Pan, which starred Allison Williams. The network will also be doing things a bit differently this time around. Unlike the previous two productions, this time NBC has partnered with Cirque du Soleil to not only produce The Wiz Live!, but to bring the event to Broadway in 2016.
"We love this yearly tradition and we're more excited than ever to not only bring another Broadway musical to America's living rooms, but also see it land on Broadway as well," NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a statement. "Cirque's incredible imagination will help bring the fantasy world of Oz vividly to life and give this great show a modern spin on the age-old story we all love."
The Wiz Live! will premiere on NBC Dec. 3.
