Calling all strawberry lovers! June 14th is the celebration of National Strawberry Shortcake Day, one of our all-time favorite summer desserts.
Editors Kate Donovan and Anne Kim participated in a hands-on cooking demo hosted by Driscoll's berries and featuring one of InStyle’s favorite bakers, Dorie Greenspan.
Greenspan is the author of 11 cookbooks, including the forthcoming Baking Chez Moi: Recipes from My Paris Home to Your Home Anywhere
(available October 2014 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt).
Lemon zest and buttermilk bring a subtle tang to the fluffy biscuit—the perfect companion to the delectably sweet and syrupy strawberry compote. For a garden-party twist, Greenspan’s version of the classic fruit concoction adds a splash of flowery rose extract to the strawberry and whipped cream filling.
Layered with whipped cream and topped with crunchy, sugared rose petals, this easy-to-make dessert will steal the show at your next al fresco dinner party. Make sure to assemble the biscuit, whipped cream and strawberry filling right before serving to keep the stacks from becoming soggy.
