For most of us at InStyle, January usually means two things: snow and sales. As temperatures continue to plunge, there’s no better time than now to grab all those amazing winter finds you had to pass up over the holidays.

Stores' final markdowns are notorious for making the year’s trendiest items seem more appealing to your wallet. In the long run this isn’t always the best deal for your closet. We opted to round up the best staples to buy for wearing any winter season.

Coats Look for coats in neutrals with classic silhouettes rather than bold colors you might not like next season. Pictured above, from left: T by Alexander Wang, $665, lagarconne.com; MSGM, $425, modaoperandi.com; 3.1 Phillip Lim, $1,046.50, lagarconne.com.

Sweaters For most of us, it’s still going to be cold for the next three months, making an arsenal of cozy sweaters essential. You can never have too many solids but try finding one with a nice pattern or detail.
