When she's not fighting the bad guys, engaging in drama with Fitz, or just looking fabulous during ABC's hit series, Scandal, there's nothing Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) enjoys more than kicking back at home with a bottle of red and a bowl of popcorn.
Harlem-based Top Chef Masters champ (and five-time James Beard award winner) Marcus Samuelsson is known for his global flavors and spice-infused comfort food. His forthcoming cookbook, Marcus Off-Duty: The Recipes I Cook at Home ($35; available for pre-order at amazon.com) is filled with approachable, crowd-pleasing recipes for the home chef- which of course, includes popcorn. This spicy-sweet Ethiopian-inspired popcorn topping is a favorite of the chef and his wife, Maya. Says Samuelsson, "The sweetness from the cinnamon and brown sugar perfectly balances the the kick of paprika and cayenne in this spice blend. A bowl of this and your favorite flick—it doesn’t get much better than that." Get his recipe below.
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp cayenne
1 tbsp brown sugar
1. Mix cinnamon, salt, paprika, cayenne, and light brown sugar together in a bowl.
2. Pop 1/2 cup popcorn kernels (or use about 4 to 5 cups plain pre-popped popcorn. Toss the popcorn with the spice mix and serve.
