And here’s yet another reason to tune into the People’s Choice Awards Wednesday night. Former Vine star-turned-chart topper Shawn Mendes, who’s set to perform at this year’s first major awards show, has officially been signed to Wilhelmina Models, joining the ranks of pop stars like Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas, and fashion favorites like Marlon Teixeira and Cindy Bruna.
A modeling contract isn’t the only accomplishment the 17-year-old singer has under his belt. In addition to opening for Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour last year, Mendes released a chart-topping album, Handwritten, which includes current hits like “Stitches.” The crooner’s lyrics are also on the tip of every teenage girl’s tongue thanks to his and Fifth Harmony lead singer Camila Cabello’s groovy duet, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
“I’m so excited to be working with Wilhelmina,” Mendes said in a statement. “I can’t wait for everyone to see what we have planned for this year!” Wilhelmina CEO Alex Vaickus also shared excited sentiments: “Shawn is an infectious and talented performer, and we are confident his career in the modeling industry will be as exciting and accomplished. We look forward to the journey of working closely with him and the team to build the Shawn Mendes brand.”
So can we expect the star to face a major brand’s campaign sometime soon? All signs point in that direction.
