Season 5 kicks off with a bang! In Episode 1, Olivia attends a white-tie dinner at the White House and wears a Rubin Singer stunner. "The reason we had Olivia in black and white is so that she and Fitz would match exactly," Paolo says. She pairs the dress with Tiffany & Co jewels.

Scandal kicked off Season 5 with a bang last night, and the fashion did not disappoint. Not only did we get to see Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) back in all her problem-solving glory, but we were also treated to some pretty incredible ensembles.

For a white-tie dinner at the White House celebrating a visit from the Queen of Caldonia and her family, Olivia and Abby (Darby Stanchfield) pulled out all the stops. Both characters donned Rubin Singer gowns with Jimmy Choo kicks and Tiffany & Co. jewelry, but their looks couldn't have been anymore different.

"The reason we had Olivia in black and white is so that she and Fitz would match exactly," the show's costume designer Lyn Paolo tells InStyle (pictured at bottom). "In this episode everything was very black and white, and the clothes reflect that." Needless to say, we're enjoying every scandalous moment of Olivia and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) being back together.

In the premiere we also saw Mellie's (Bellamy Young) wardrobe take a turn, reflecting her new career as a senator. "We changed her a little bit," Paolo shares of Mrs. Grant's killer red Michael Kors suit. "She's much more suited-up from now on."

But as far as what to expect for the rest of the season, Paolo stayed fairly mum. "We're starting the season with Olivia and Fitz being together, so as their relationship evolves Olivia's wardrobe will reflect that."
