You might want to sit down, Sex and the City fans: Sarah Jessica Parker has a theory about the show that is game-changing.

The star told Chris Hardwick during a visit to the Nerdist podcast this week that she isn’t entirely sure that Carrie’s girl squad members are actual living, breathing New York City fashionistas. “I used to wonder if Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda were real,” Parker divulged, explaining that she thought the women were just character’s from her iconic fictional writer’s column.

Explained Parker, “They’re such perfectly archetypal characters. So you’re writing a column about sexual politics and observations of female/male, primarily, heterosexual relationships, so you’re picking one type. You’re saying ‘this type is this and this,’ and then you complicate it more, like any good writer does.” “So I’m not entirely sure they are real,” she concluded.

The actress thinks that each week’s story was merely the events written in Carrie’s column: “What we are seeing isn’t necessarily what happened in New York City.”

The theory means that all of the fabulous four’s adventures — from Mexico to Abu Dhabi — were merely brain fuel for the Upper East Side’s most unforgettable trendsetter.

Parker, who is making her return to HBO for Divorce, has ditched much of Carrie’s personality for the new series — but sees some similarities in both shows behind-the-scenes. She recently told Refinery29 that her new onscreen partner, Thomas Haden Church, reminds her “a great deal of Chris Noth,” who played Mr. Big on Sex and the City. “He’s a very similar mate,” she shared. “Like I loved Chris, I loved playing opposite him, I loved working with him, I loved loving him, I loved fighting with him. It’s the same with Tom, so it’s like a familiar kind of affection. It’s a huge treat.”
