Thanks to her wife, Ellen DeGeneres, we know that Scandal star Portia de Rossi is sometimes subject to a bad hair day. But for ABC’s #TGIT Shondaland party Saturday night in West Hollywood, the blonde actress was nothing but polished with a slicked-back ‘do and a long-sleeved, multi-paneled Emanuel Ungaro design. “I just thought it was a timeless, sophisticated look, so it appealed to me,” de Rossi told InStyle.

The bold, form-fitting ensemble didn’t surprise us considering the beauty repeatedly steps out in modern creations. But instead, it was the explanation of her style’s duality that impressed us. “I don’t usually put myself together in this kind of way. Although, because I’ve been working for so many years, it seems like this is me. But if you see paparazzi pictures on the street, you’d be like, ‘Oh! I get who she is. She wears grungy old T-shirts and weird boots,'” she told us.

Sure, it may be tough to see past her red carpet appeal, but de Rossi described her favorite T-shirts as “punk rock glam meets whatever,” adding, “I feel schizophrenic with fashion, actually, because left to my own devices, I wear a lot of Saint Laurent and—I probably dress like a teenager half the time.”

De Rossi may possess an air of confidence when it comes to her style choices, but the actress, who credits Burberry and Saint Laurent boots among her recent fall fashion purchases, still turns to others for inspiration. “I actually think Gwen Stefani has always dressed so well,” she said. “Because that’s like that little part of me that wishes I was a rock star. But I mean, when she started wearing heels and sweat pants, I was like, ‘She can make anything work.’ And I just think she’s kind of awesome.”
