Pirelli has created conversation-worthy calendars since 1964, but for the first time in history, the Italian tire brand has taken a completely new direction this year.
The 2017 Pirelli Calendar—captured by one of the world’s top photographers, Peter Lindbergh—was presented in Paris today and the new publication takes a deeper dive into the world of beauty from a different angle: one void of retouching, overdone makeup, and covering up of human emotion that has been such a large part of the past.
“In a time when women are represented in the media and everywhere else, as ambassadors of perfection and youth, I thought it was important to remind everyone that there is a different beauty, more real and truthful and not manipulated by commercial or any other interests. A beauty which speaks about individuality, courage to be yourself, and your own private sensibility,” said Lindbergh, who has shot the calendar twice in the past.
Therefore, he has chosen the title “Emotional” in order to emphasize how the idea behind his photos was “to create a calendar, not around perfect bodies, but on sensitivity and emotion—stripping down to the very soul of the sitters, who thus become more nude than naked."
Fourteen actresses including Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, Helen Mirren, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlotte Rampling, Lea Seydoux, Uma Thurman, Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Robin Wright, and Ziyi Zhang stripped down for the shots, which were captured at five locations (from fast food joints to rundown hotels) over a span of a few months in the spring, that has resulted in a 40-page masterpiece.
“They all agreed to be part of this sort of experiment, political statement,” Lindbergh said. “[I wanted to capture] the idea of beauty which speaks about individuality, the courage to be yourself, and your very own sensibility. That’s my own definition of a woman today."
When asked if he intentionally chose older women to include (many of the actresses are in their 40s and 50s; Kidman is on the heels of her 50th birthday next summer), he said no, that he simply chose his favorites, regardless of age. "The purpose of this is to say, 'I don’t accept that image of beauty,' which was been created by consumer interest, but to remind them what beauty really is."
