It's the moment legions of One Direction fans had been dreading: the band's last performance before taking a break for 18 months, if not more.
The venue they chose on Sunday night was, appropriately enough, the finals of the British version of The X Factor, the show where the group was first formed six years ago (they came in third, but the winner is largely forgotten today). They performed "History" and then, for an emotional finale, their new single "Infinity."
But the real talking point was Harry Styles's tomato-red Gucci suit from the Spring 2016 collection, with a floral print even bolder than the one on the suit from the same collection he wore to the American Music Awards. Fashionistas loved it, but viewer opinion was divided, with one writing, "Never thought I'd see my nan's curtains on TV until Harry Styles turned up wearing them as a suit."

Bandmates Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson kept it simple with classic suits, while Liam Payne added a jazzy (but restrained compared to the Gucci) dusty rose velvet jacket.
The band as a whole similarly expressed their thanks with this message on Facebook.
Faint consolation for fans now going through 1D withdrawal, but better than nothing.
