Glamour is at the core of all that Olivier Rousteing creates for Balmain, but there’s an unexpected point of reference that inspired the designer’s latest project: soccer. Officially dubbed the NikeLab x Olivier Rousteing: Football Nouveau collection, the talent teamed up with the athletic wear megabrand to deliver a selection of field-ready separates and accessories all meant to honor his favorite sport, football (better known as soccer to Americans).

“Fashion is usually about the catwalk and the glamour, but with Nike it was about performance and the athletes,” Rousteing said in a statement. “What I love about this collection is that we are integrating the iconic style of football into sport style.” That integration is best evidenced through zipper-adorned jackets, gym-ready crop tops, and long-lasting sweats, all in a sleek black and gold palette. In addition, four sneaker styles (dubbed Mercurial, Magista, Hypervenom, and Tiempo) also reflect the collection’s modern aesthetic.

“Olivier was obsessed with the complete look, making sure each piece worked together—not just within the men’s and women’s collections, but also between the two,” Jarrett Reynolds, NikeLab Senior Apparel Design Director,” said in a statement. “At every design review, he’d ask, ‘Would a football player really wear that? That question helped keep the collection rooted in sport.”
