The thought of going under the knife for a cosmetic procedure can be terrifying, but thanks to technology, there are more options out there that don't require invasive techniques and also deliver more natural-looking results. We turned to Dr. Simon Ourian, a certified cosmetic dermatologist who has worked with several celebrities like Kim Kardashian, to unlock all of the details on non-surgical breast augmentation and non-surgical breast lifts.

The Beverly Hills-based doctor started off by explaining what exactly the meaning of the term "non-surgical." "The use of 'non-surgical' term means there are no anesthesia, incisions, and scalpels required. Also, there is no scar and no implants involved."

Dr. Ourian went on to explain, "During a non-surgical breast augmentation, we essentially take the client's own liposuctioned fat from other body parts and inject it into their breasts. Next, we inject stem cells collected from their own blood. Non-surgical augmentation results can last many years, depending on the doctor's technique."

So how do you know if this procedure is best for you? Dr. Ourian suggests, "This is a breast augmentation option for women who are looking for a relatively small increase (one to three cup sizes), and would prefer natural results." The pro also recommends the practice for patients who "have enough fat in another part of the body to be able to donate the fat for the breasts. This usually means a person has to be at least five to 10 pounds overweight."

Great candidates for the non-surgical augmentation also include those with a history of breast cancer in their family. Overall, Dr. Ourian believes this "may be a great alternative for many women, as opposed to the traditional breast augmentation requiring implants."

Non-surgical breast lifts are a little different from augmentations. "This procedure involves the use of a high definition diffused laser light called Coolbeam. The laser light is absorbed by the water in the skin cells around the breast tissue," explained Dr. Ourian while adding, "The absorption in turn causes the instantaneous vaporization or of the cell. As your physician passes the laser light over the skin, a mere 30-millionth of an inch of tissue is removed at a time. This incredible control allows your physician to treat the skin around the breast tissue at different angles, and causes an overall tightening of the collagen fibers in the surrounding skin. Therefore, a tightening of the skin will cause a lift in the skin, much like what happens with a laser facelift."

"The best candidates for non-surgical breast lift are women who are physically healthy, psychologically stable, and realistic in their expectations. Most clients are 30 or older, but if sagging is a problem earlier on, you can still opt to have this procedure at a younger age."

And the nearly non-existent recovery time makes this treatment worth it. "There is some temporary redness and swelling for the first few days, but you can go back to work immediately. The disadvantage, however, of this option compared with a traditional breast lift is that the amount of lifting is limited to a few centimeters. Also this non-surgical treatment can not address heavy breasts."

Dr. Ourian summed up by saying, "The results of non-surgical breast lifts are long-lasting and range from three to five years, or longer. As with similar subtle procedures, you will still look like yourself, only better. The skin will appear softer and firmer after each treatment."
