Emoji, the insanely cute Japanese emoticons that are taking over our texts, just got even more omnipresent with the launch of Emojify. The new app gives your own personal photos a complete emoji makeover, melding the sweet emoticons into an intricate mosaic of an image. Think Chuck Close meets Hello Kitty! “It really started out as a thought experiment on image representation,” Kwok Pan, founder of VoidWorks, tells Wired. “Like what if the pixels which made up an image are not just dots of colors but have something more to it?” Here's how it works: The app measures the hues and brightness of a picture and arranges the emoticons accordingly, with the brightest parts of a picture determining which emojis and colors are used where. Wired points out that portraits work best, so we gave it a shot using our September cover. We think it's pretty impressive -- what do you think? Want to give Emojify a try for yourself? Download it from the iTunes store for $0.99.
