Rose Byrne is having a very busy SXSW film festival, with not one but two films debuting the same night: Adult Beginners, opening wide April 24 and Spy, an espionage comedy by Bridesmaids director Paul Feig that stars Melissa McCarthy and Byrne (in theaters June 5). Byrne tagged along with beau/co-star Bobby Cannavale, co-star Nick Kroll, and producer Mark Duplass at the Samsung SXSW Studio for a cocktail party celebrating Adult Beginners hosted by Samsung, Radius, and InStyle. We sat down with the versatile Australian actress to get her take on the SXSW vibe.
SXSW From An Aussie's POV: Austin reminds me of Melbourne, Australia. It is a really great city. It's the capital of Victoria, has a great music scene, and a beautiful river that runs through it. [It has] a lot of authenticity.
When-In-Rome Austin Moment: I went to a food truck yesterday. It was in an empty lot just off of Franklin street. There were, like, 20 food trucks there. I ate a taco with my hands and it was great.
Packing Strategy: I was very organized this time, which is good. I really wanted to bring some walking shoes because I wanted to walk around the city. I brought some little Alexander Wang boots which are really great. I’ve been living in them all winter.
One Dress, Two Premieres: I've never had two premieres in one night, but it is okay because it is Austin and it feels relaxed I’m not wearing a gown or anything. It feels cool and [the Spy screening] is in the beautiful theater. It will be fun. Jason (Statham) and Melissa (McCarthy) are here.
We're All Adult Beginners: It’s a beautiful gem of a movie. I hope that people will relate to it. It's a movie about siblings and family and tragedy and the absurdity of being a parent. It’s very clever.
X-Men Goes 80s: I'm leaving tomorrow and off to do another film. It's called The Meddler with Susan Sarandon and JK Simmons and I’m really excited about it. Then I’m going off to do X-Men: The Apocolypse. My character Moira MacTaggert is back! She’s been chilling out in a yoga studio somewhere, relaxing and it's the 80s. I'm excited about those shoulder pads.
