Mindy Lahiri showed off her new-mom style for the first time on this week's episode of The Mindy Project. As you can imagine, it was quite awesome. Though Mindy Kaling's character spent about half the episode in pajama sets—all by Bedhead—she was still the style maven we all know and love.
For Mindy's return from the hospital, costume designer Salvador Perez dressed the new mother in a funky gray Vivienne Westwood jumpsuit adorned with stars (above) and and says he did this in part to show that even going into labor on a subway wouldn't slow down the lady's fashion mojo. He also chose the piece out of respect for new moms who don't lose all that weight the second the baby is born and throw on a pair of skinny jeans. "You just had a baby, you want to be comfortable," he tells InStyle.
When Mindy got bored at home on her first day of maternity leave—Danny took away the WiFi and televisions!—and escaped to go see Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal at their cookbook signing, Perez gave her in another jumpsuit. This time she wore a 7 for All Mankind denim piece paired with a Vince leather scuba jacket (which she has worn in two previous episodes).
But really the PJs stole the show, especially the pineapple patterned ones. Plus, Bedhead made a matching pair for little baby Leo Castellano. "There's always a lot of pajamas because she [Kaling] loves them," he says.
And what should we expect in the coming episodes? According to Perez, they will feature more high fashion outfits, including a custom matching mom and baby ensemble. This week's episode actually had fewer outfit changes than usual, he says. "It was a very casual Mindy Project, which is very rare for us."
