In celebration of M.I.A.’s new album Matangi — which drops today — we picked our three favorite looks from her recently released collaboration with Versus Versace. The M.I.A. x Versus Versace 19-piece collection was inspired by all of the counterfeit Versace items found in London markets. The singer put a streetwear twist on variations of Versace’s iconic designs, like the gold Medusa head and colorful Greek frieze. Featuring kaleidoscope prints, the line includes pieces for men and women, from T-Shirts and printed jeans to silk shirts, jersey dresses and military-inspired outerwear. As for M.I.A.'s music, her highly anticipated fourth album has 15 songs including the 2012 hit “Bad Girls,” and already-previewed tracks “Bring The Noize,” “Y.A.L.A.,” and “Come Walk With Me." The record is named for Matangi, a 5,000-year-old Hindu goddess who governs speech, music, knowledge and the arts — which the singer stumbled upon when browsing the internet. Coincidentally enough, M.I.A.'s actual moniker is Mathangi (nearly identical to that of the goddess), so she felt an affinity with her ancient namesake and the album title was born. We got a sneak preview of the new tunes at SPIN & Soho House's Satellite Nights event on Tuesday night, where M.I.A.—er, Mathangi—performed with a gaggle of backup dancers to fans including Lorde, Alexander Wang, Timo Weiland, and InStyle's editor Ariel Foxman. A chaotic thunderstorm of hip-hop, bhangra, punk, and pop with spitfire raps and intense wordplay, Matangi definitely delivers. Be sure to check out the album on iTunes right now, and shop the entire M.I.A. x Versus Versace capsule collection at versace.com.
