Melissa McCarthy isn’t the first woman to be hailed as a comedic genius, but she’s the first to take home the award of that name. The leading lady of The Boss was honored with the third-ever Comedic Genius Award at the 2016 MTV Movie Awards this weekend.
“I may be the first woman to receive this award, but I am certainly, certainly not the first one to deserve it,” she said after crowd-surfing her way to the stage. “I think I’m a walking human patchwork of other remarkable funny women that I have loved and studied over the years, and I am only here because of [them].”
The Spy star thanked female comedians like Lucille Ball, Bette Midler, and Whoopi Goldberg for inspiring her before giving a shout-out to her mother, who told her to forget about being likable and “lovingly go for the kill.”
As her new film, The Boss, takes over the box office, it’s clear the award is well deserved. Following in the footsteps of previous winners Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, it seems there’s no stopping this funny lady.
