After an especially brutal winter, we can't channel the warmer weather fast enough, so we're taking our deep wine lip shades in a bolder, brighter direction. While we'll never retire our classic red, vivid citrus lipsticks are giving the hue some fierce competition.
For starters, the color works on just about everyone, instantly warming up all kinds of skin tones. Plus, the trend has been spotted on everyone from movie stars to supermodels. We're especially inspired by the high-shine version Lupita Nyong'O wore to the NAACP Image Awards, which proves a strong lip doesn't always call for a shadow-free eye. "The look was monochromatic with bronze, orange-y tones to go with her dress," says her makeup artist Nick Barose. "To keep with the theme, I stained her mouth with red Diorific Lipstick in Dolce Vita ($36; dior.com), and then I added the shimmery bronze Dior Addict Gloss in Paradise ($30; dior.com) on the center of her lips for added drama."
An orange lip makes a major impact with minimal effort, so we spoke to more pro makeup artists to find out the exact products used on the runway and red carpet, along with key tips on perfecting the look.
