Happy Birthday to you, Jude Law! The handsome, Oscar-nominated actor turns 42-years-old today. The London native, got his start in 1987 acting on stage at the National Youth Music Theater, but broke out as a bona fide star in the United States on the silver screen. In 1999, he wowed and seduced audiences with his unforgettable performance in the gorgeous, but haunting psychological thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley. (The role also earned Law his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.)
From there on, Law became a film staple in the 2000s. From 2003's sweeping war drama Cold Mountain (which secured his second Oscar nod) to 2006's delightful Christmas rom-com The Holiday to 2009's blockbuster adventure Sherlock Holmes, the versatile star is the rare character actor with marquee good looks. (Law's other notable credits in the early 2000's include A.I. Artificial Intelligence, I Heart Huckabees, Closer, and The Aviator.)
Though Law—now a father of four—may not be as ubiquitous as he was in the early 2000's, the actor is still turning out impressive work in films like Contagion, Hugo, Side Effects, Dom Hemingway, and one of 2014's best reviewed films, The Grand Budapest Hotel. If anything, the best is still yet to come from the lauded Law!
