Pulling off a smoky eye as the mercury rises can be tricky territory—the heat and humidity can cause the effect to come off as smudgy rather than sexy, and deep black or navy hues may look severe against summer's softer color scheme. That's why the subtle effect we spotted on Kate Mara last night serves as perfect middle ground for a night out, or when you want to amp up your every day minimalist eye.

"In the summer, the attitude is more laid back, so put away your regular black or chocolate shadows and opt for plum or raisin-toned browns," says her makeup artist Nick Barose. "The hint of red will make the effect a little more bad ass, as regular brown can seem like you're going to the office, and black comes off way too serious."

To create her look, Barose used a damp angled brush, and smudged the Votre Vu eye shadow in Beaujoalis ($19; votrevu.com) along her upper and lower lash lines. "I added a bit of a wing, and finished with two coats of black mascara," he adds. Mara's lips and cheeks came together just as effortlessly, with Barose using the YSL Kiss and Blush in #7 Corail Affranchi ($40; yslbeautyus.com) to impart both a warm, rosy flush, and a soft peach lip in one quick sweep.
