When news broke over the weekend that Lady Gaga was named as the face of Versace's spring/summer 2014 ad campaign, it came as no surprise that the singer chose to represent the brand at the 2013 American Music Awards in not one, but three of its designs. She kicked off the night riding atop a human horse in a chiffon lilac gown (the same one in her Versace ad campaign) with a Medusa body chain and matching lilac platform sandals, followed by a blindingly spectacular vintage Versace gown bedazzled in all-over Swarovski crystals. She concluded her Versace parade with a performance in a custom Atelier Versace Swarovski jacket and a matching pleated skirt that she removed to reveal a custom bodysuit embroidered with Swarovski crystals and silver chainmail detailing.
The partnership between Lady Gaga and Versace began with the artist wearing archive Versace pieces in her Edge of Glory music video two years ago and continued with Gaga dedicating an ode to the designer titled "Donatella" in her latest album "Artpop." Both driven by similar values, the same uninhibited attitude toward art and creativity, and the same fearless, fierce aesthetics, it seems like the union was a match made in (fashion) heaven. "I am honored that my friend Lady Gaga is the face of our new Versace campaign. I wanted to capture her true beauty and spirit in images that are elegant and alluring," said Donatella Versace in a statement. "She is like family to me, the embodiment of the Versace DNA." It rings true, especially with Lady Gaga styled to Donatella-perfection, right down to her signature platinum blonde tresses. And thanks to her AMA outfit changes, consider us prepped and primed for a season of Mother Monster in nothing but Versace.
