Singer Katharine McPhee has what it takes to effortlessly sport jumpsuits, crop tops, gowns, and even off-the-shoulder dresses on the red carpet. But despite her contagious smile and toned physique, McPhee confesses it’s not just svelte looks that matter to her.

Yesterday in Beverly Hills, the star stepped out to celebrate a concert in honor of the Oceana organization. “I like to do something on the humanitarian side for schools and children,” she told us, adding, “I think it’s important to have like-minded people around you—people who challenge you.” And while many Hollywood A-listers turn to family and friends for motivation, McPhee didn’t have to look farther than Facebook.

When asked to share one piece of advice for young girls around the world, she cited Angelina Jolie’s recent post about valuing yourself from the inside (below) and said she thought it was “so beautiful.”

“We’ve all heard that before, but people who are so incredibly beautiful…you know they talk about how your looks are fading, because everyone gets old,” she said. “So I think I would say for the amount of time you spend on your outwardly appearances, going to the gym, going to the next exercise craze, diet, spending time on tutorials for hair and makeup, I would spend as much time if not more—you know, we forget about the inside and it’s so easy to get caught up in outwardly things and at the end of the day you’re left with who you are inside.” Duly noted.
