Iris Apfel is a style icon in every sense of the word. At 94 years old, she is a legend in the fashion world, with a documentary that she can call her own (now available for streaming on Netflix), a design collection for HSN, and a front-row seat at any show of her choosing. Such was the case when designer Naeem Khan presented his fall 2016 bridal collection in his studio space. Instantly recognizable, thanks to her signature round frames, Apfel nodded—the seal of approval—to every look that swept by.
"It was beyond stupendous, totally spectacular, magnificent," Apfel tells InStyle after the show. "I’ve run out of adjectives. It was just superb in every way."
In the documentary Iris, the icon was filmed flipping through an old album of when she and her late husband Carl Apfel tied the knot. "The dress was pink lace," she reminisced on-screen. "I’m really very practical, so I wanted a dress that I could wear after the wedding and not just put in a box."
We had to know: What would she wear if she got married again? "I love that plain white silk one. It was so gorgeous without any embellishment," she says. "I love them all, but that dress, if it had long sleeves, I would be very happy wearing it."
But even though her practical, frills-free approach toward occasion dressing hasn't changed drastically over the years, that didn't stop her from gasping when the final look stepped out on the runway—an extravagant gold hand-painted tulle showstopper of a ball gown, complete with a gilded veil and crown.
