Natalie Portman proved that stepping out of one’s color comfort zone can majorly pay off, as she took to the red carpet with a gorgeous, deep red lip at the New York premiere of her film Jane Got a Gun at the Museum of Modern Art last night.
Portman’s makeup artist for the event, Pati Dubroff for Dior Beauty, explained that the inspiration for the actress’s unexpected bold lip came from the intricate, colorful beading on her gown. “As Natalie was wearing a multi-colored floral beaded dress, we decided to go with a deep red lip-focused beauty look—which is something a bit different for Natalie," said Dubroff. "Paired with her dress as a part of her final look, the dark lip became almost a neutral shade, harmonious with the many colors happening on the dress. With the bold lip, I then focused on the skin and brows, with just a faint smudge of color on the eyes.”
No dark lip is complete without a flawless base. Dubroff first prepped Portman’s skin with Dior Prestige la Crème ($390; dior.com) and primed the skin along her T-zone with Diorskin Forever & Ever Wear Primer ($50; dior.com). Then, she evened Portman’s skin with Diorskin Forever Foundation ($50; sephora.com) and set it with a dusting of Diorskin Nude Air Loose Powder ($56; sephora.com). Dubroff completed the base by slightly sculpting Portman’s cheeks with Diorblush Sculpt Professional Contouring Powder Blush in Beige Contour ($43; sephora.com), using the darker shade on her cheekbones and the lighter highlight shade on the tops of her cheekbones.
To keep the focus on Portman’s lips, Dubroff defined her eyes using the soft taupe and caramel shades of Diorshow Colour & Contour Eyeshadow & Liner Duo in Twig ($33; sephora.com), and made her lashes pop with a generous coat of Diorshow Mascara in Pro Black ($28; sephora.com). Finally, she completed Portman’s look by coating the star's lips with Dior Addict Lipstick in Insoumise ($35; sephora.com), a perfect Bordeaux shade.
