If anyone can convince us to try a trend, it’s Alexa Chung. While attending a recent event, the fashionista mastered flawless, barely-there lips and now we want to, too.

To keep a pale lip color from washing you out, follow Chung’s lead and accentuate the rest of your features. “I started with Dolce & Gabbana Perfect Mono Cream Color Shadow in Lava ($36; nordstrom.com) at the upper lash line, and blended from there to the crease of her eye,” the star's makeup artist Tamah tells InStyle. “Next, I layered MAC Carbon Eyeshadow ($16; nordstrom.com) under Dior 5 Couleurs Designer Eyeshadow Palette in #708 (upper left color, $60; dior.com) and I blended that under her lower lash line as well.” To add more drama, she rimmed her waterline with black waterproof liner and applied two coats of Eyeko’s Black Magic Mascara ($24; eyeko.com) on the top and bottom lashes. Finally, a rosewood blush instantly warmed up her skin tone.VIDEO: Alexa Chung Shows How to Recreate Her Signature ’60s Makeup Look

When it came time for the lips, the pro reached for a peachy shade to complement Chung’s light to medium complexion, swiping on Lime Crime Lipstick in Coquette ($18; limecrime.com). When trying a nude lip, Tamah recommends prepping with a generous coat of lip balm. Just remember to blot with a tissue so that your pout is hydrated but not slippery when applying the color. “Starting in the center of your lower lip, press your lips together,” she says. “Then using your fingers, ‘tap’ the pigment to the outer edges of your mouth.” Seal in the look with a nude lip liner or clear wax pencil if necessary. “The key with a nude lip is to keep a hint of translucency to the color,” she adds. “You don't want to erase your lip color as much as you want to mute it down a bit."
