Halloween is just a few days away … still figuring out to wear? Us too. While there are hundreds of video tutorials on YouTube for costume makeup, we are particularly loving the message behind beauty vlogger Deepica Mutyala’s Halloween inspired video. Mutyala, who created the concept for the #beyourownprincess campaign, shows that you can transform yourself into any character, regardless of your ethnicity or gender. While she dresses up as popular Disney princesses like Ariel, Cinderella and Jasmine, she also dresses up as prince.

Like Mutyala, I often felt limited in the characters I could transform into as a child. Being South Asian myself, I had always felt that my brown skin and dark features couldn’t work for most Disney princesses. And while makeup can be so transformative, it’s key to have the confidence to be whatever character you want, whether that’s a princess, a prince—or anyone else.

“This video is all about loving and accepting yourself as a person, beyond ethnicity or gender. You can be whoever you want to be, regardless of what you look like on the outside," says Mutyala. "Don't let anyone or anything define you who you are—you define yourself.” Now, that’s a whole lot better than candy corn.
