Move over, ombré: There's a hot new hair color trend in town, and it's saturating the tresses of Hollywood's finest.
There's no doubt that ombre was the hair obsession of 2014, but the hot new color trend of this year might just be ecaille---the French word for tortoiseshell, also known as the "tortoiseshell technique." Think golden highlights paired with darker, rich caramel tones.
"Ecaille was a big trend this fall and I see it continuing into spring," celebrity colorist and Clairol Color Director James Corbett tells InStyle. "It's warm browns, honeys, and ambers just like a tortoiseshell comb. Blondes are more golden, with a few babylights worked into these tones to create the sublet dimension. Think Khloe Karadshian, Jessica Alba, and brand new mom Blake Lively. I have a lot of clients asking for this!"
To achieve the look, have your colorist focus on a few bolder, face-framing pieces in the front, complimented by softer, lighter painted pieces all around (you can also replicate this look at home with a Clairol painting kit).
But that's not the only trend we'll see this year. A few others are creeping into the color competition. "There has been a real trend with platinum hair and I don't think it is going anywhere! Even the guys are trying to get in on this trend---think Adam Levine last year and just recently, Justin Bieber!," says Corbett, who notes that platinum hair is one of the top searches on YouTube. "The key is that it has to be cool and or at least baby blonde like Gwen Stefani to work well. January Jones has been rocking this color as of late as well."
