Two weeks ago, Younger star Hilary Duff debuted her latest hair color, a pastel shade of pink, on Instagram. Turns out, that’s where she got the idea: “Toward the end of filming Younger, I knew I wanted to do something fun with my hair,” she told InStyle this week.

“I always go on Instagram, and this time, I just typed in 'light pink hair.' I saw a bunch of stuff and thought, let’s do this. When I’m not working, dyeing my hair is a fun thing for me to do. I had greenish-blue last year, and had a lot of fun with it. And on Instagram, a lot of people are doing fun stuff with their hair, so I got inspired from that.”

After she made the decision to go rosy, she headed to celebrity-adored Nine Zero One Salon in L.A. “It was such a process,” Duff added. “A lot of people worked on me. I had two people bleach it, then a color specialist for the color. It took a full day. I arrived at 9:30 a.m. and didn’t leave until around 5 o’clock. Then, I raced home to get my son, Luca, to soccer practice. When he saw it, he said I looked like a unicorn!”

But this hue won’t last forever. “It is hard to maintain,” she said. “Every time I wash it, it fades.” Luckily, her hairstylist gave her a secret weapon, custom-making a leave-in conditioner that has the pinkish color in it. “I put it on my dry hair and let it sponge up and that helps to make the color last. It’s actually fun because I can get different tones out of it. Like now, it is a little more purple-y.”

We dig it.
