Happy 90th Birthday, Doris Day! With an impressive career in both music and film, America's original sweetheart has accomplished much in her professional life, which began at the young age of 15 as a big-band singer. Several years later, the icon, born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio, began her foray into films. Among her many roles, she starred in the beloved classics Moonlight Bay, Young at Heart, That Touch of Mink, and The Pajama Game, among others.
Despite her worldwide celebrity, Day left the industry over 30 years ago to focus on her passion—animal rights causes. "There is so much work still to do to rescue animals, and to inform people about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets," says Day, who launched her own nonprofit, the Doris Day Animal Foundation and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 for her humanitarian efforts.
