In 1928, the space age was still decades away, but in retrospect, this chrome-plated dryer would look more at home on a trip to the moon than one to the salon.

Almost every day we go through the same routine—shower, blow dry, and style. And since we're often doing this routine only half-caffeinated, sometimes we're not paying quite close enough attention to the lovely styling tools at our disposal.

Take for the example, the $300 hair dryer we were seduced into buying this holiday season. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this common tool has evolved since first being used in 1880—that's more than 130 years ago! It's almost humorous to look at how technology has advanced even in the beauty industry, and how the hair dryer evolved from an obscure stoneware 'Thermicon' brush that was heated with boiling water, to the dryer we use today.

Whether you're drying your hair at the salon under the hooded dryers, or getting the perfect blowout from a hand-held, find out exactly how far this useful tool has come.
