This season, The Good Wife’s costume designer Dan Lawson is exclusively giving InStyle readers tips for what to wear to work, inspired by the characters’ ensembles on the show.
We saw Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) in the last stages of her campaign on last night's episode of The Good Wife—and in the middle of a few messy exchanges. Costume designer Dan Lawson kept her looking calm, cool, and collected the entire time, including this speaking event look, which featured a Dior blue wool jacket with a simple black Theory tank.
He skipped the accessories to make the outfit seem more powerful. "Every now and then, I like to see without a necklace," Lawson told InStyle. "I like the drama of a bare neck and I think it exudes confidence because it lets the architecture of the outfit speak for itself." This also represented the fearlessness of Alicia, he said. "Leaving her neck open showed she wasn't afraid to be bare."
Your tip: "Keep the neckline open sometimes for an extra hit of power and femininity," Lawson says.
