This season, The Good Wifes costume designer Dan Lawson is exclusively giving InStyle readers tips for what to wear to work, inspired by the characters’ ensembles on the show.

On last night's episode of The Good Wife, Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) dealt with a voting kerfuffle (interesting timing, given it was the weekend Hillary Clinton officially announced her presidential bid). But like the inspirational #girlboss she is, she handled it with grace and style. Costume designer Dan Lawson helped with that, especially when he dressed her in this black and white Narciso Rodriguez dress and jacket combination. "I wanted Alicia to look a little different than she has before," Lawson told us after the episode. "This black and white look was a different silhouette and color balance. It made for a very interesting color-blocking effect and, consequently, a very modern look."

Your takeaway tip: "Embrace black and white within an ensemble," said Lawson. "Although classic, the color pairing will be an instant way to appear being modern and elegant."
