This season, The Good Wifes costume designer Dan Lawson is exclusively giving InStyle readers tips for what to wear to work, inspired by the characters’ ensembles on the show.

On last night's episode of The Good Wife, Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) won the state's attorney race, something that should have had a little more joy than the immediate drama that ensued after. Nevertheless, she remained chic as ever as she dealt with her new set of challenges, thanks to costume designer Dan Lawson. This week, his favorite look was this white wool Escada jacket, he told us, which featured a modified scalloped hem. "I wanted Alicia to be very clean and elegant, but still stylish," he told us. "This shawl collar reads classic, but the scalloped edge says interesting and unique. It proves that even when you want to go simple and elegant and straight-forward with a look, a little extra detail can make all the difference."

Your takeaway tip: "Use a unique detail to make what could be a flat look into eye-catching style that shows your personality as well as your discerning taste," Lawson says.
