Rue McClanahan, best known for playing saucy southern belle Blanche Devereaux on The Golden Girls, passed away today at the age of 76. The Oklahoma native began her career in theater where she starred in the Off Broadway show The Golden Fleece. After catching the eye of legendary TV producer Norman Lear, McClanahan was cast as a guest star on All in the Family as well as its spinoff, Maude, where she first shared the screen with future Golden Girls costar Bea Arthur. In 1985, the two actresses joined Betty White and Estelle Getty as the Golden Girls, the funny foursome who proved that good humor is the secret to aging gracefully. McClanahan won an Emmy for her role as Blanche and continued to star in series such as Law & Order and Murphy Brown.
