Gigi Hadid is more than just a runway model or the face of Maybelline—she's Marilyn Monroe. Or, as close as one can get to being the iconic star. The model of the moment opened the Max Mara fall/winter 2015 show during Milan Fashion Week with a look that had everyone do a double take.
With her effortlessly tousled blonde waves and the enveloping camel coat that she clutched closed, Hadid struck an uncanny resemblance to the late and great Monroe. But that was all intentional, a deliberate move on Max Mara's part to bring her to life, because (no surprise here) the legendary actress served as muse for fall. The collection is centered around photographer George Barris's 1962 photo series of Monroe at the beach where he captured her in the ocean wrapped up in a chunky Norwegian cardigan and in the sand swathed in a sun-soaked camel blanket.
As "icons of classic chic, beauty, and intelligence," Max Mara and Marilyn Monroe delivered that very aesthetic by way of bookish tassel loafers, cocoon-like coats (inspired by that beach blanket), menswear pieces, and chunky knits. And it wouldn't be a Monroe collection without her signature slip dresses and sexy bustiers, because some like it hot, right?
