Lupita Nyong'o's rainbow streak continues! As we've seen at the many red carpet events she attends, our style muse knows a thing or two about working a daring makeup look—and the bold blue shadow she chose over the weekend for the Veuve Cicquot Polo Classic at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, N.J., is further proof that she can pull off every hue of the spectrum.
The star's makeup artist Nick Barose channeled the summery blue skies as inspiration, and paired the effect with a soft wash of color on her lips. "When it comes to summer makeup, don't overthink it—blue is actually easier to wear than you imagine," he tells InStyle.com. "They key is to keep the application simple."
With a wet shadow brush, Barose applied the cobalt shade from Lancome’s 5-Pan Eyeshadow Palette in Midnight Rush ($50; lancome-usa.com), and blended it all over her lids and diffused the color past the crease. "I smudged it around the eyes to create kind of a soft smoke," he says. "The blue is already such a statement, so go easy with the application, and keep it uncomplicated." To ensure the pop of color remained the focal point, Barose went for minimal liner and mascara, then finished the look with a sheer berry lip stain. If you're trying your own hand at the effect, pick up one of your seasonal fall lipsticks, and blot it on to create the tint. Use your finger to apply the product, and lightly dab the color onto your pout until you reach your desired intensity.
