After a month hiatus, Nashville returned with lots of drama! Picking up where the previous episode left off, Scarlett (Clare Bowen) was rushed off stage after her breakdown and flown from Chicago back to Nashville where she was met by Rayna (Connie Britton) and her Uncle Deacon (Charles Esten). "So much of this episode was Scarlett's story," says costume designer Susie DeSanto. "Everything was motivated by what happened to her on stage. It was a sad, heavy episode."
To reflect the tumultuous nature of the storyline, DeSanto chose to go with a moody color palette. "You'll notice that Connie, Hayden, and even the boys were in dark colors. When you’re doing something that dramatic I think you need to use dark [pieces] to tell the story." To further the connection to Scarlett's storyline, DeSanto went one step further. "I put everyone in something blue so they were connected to Scarlett, as her colors are true blue and white."
This was evident in her choices for both Rayna and Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) throughout the episode. For the majority of last night's show, DeSanto had Britton’s character Rayna in a "gorgeous military-inspired" Barbara Bui coat over a dark blue Rag & Bone sweater with a pretty blue scarf, while Hayden's character Juliette was in a navy blue IRO motorcycle jacket and an Equipment blouse that they dyed blue to stay within the show's theme.
