Former Bachelorette and HGTV’s Love It or List It host Jillian Harris knows what it’s like to call the shots with 30 suitors—and now she’s sharing her advice with ABC’s newest Bachelorette JoJo Fletcher.
“It sounds cliché, but my best piece of advice for JoJo is to just be yourself,” Harris told InStyle when we caught up with her as she filmed Mr. Clean’s Dirty Little Secrets campaign. “If she has any weaknesses, she should know it is okay to show them. People are always going to comment on Instagram or on blogs, but all of that is short-term pain. It will last two months or until the next Bachelor is chosen and then JoJo will be able to focus on her relationship, which is ultimately the most important thing.”
Harris’s other F.Y.I. for JoJo (seen below with Bachelor host Chris Harrison)? Don’t play by the rules. “I was so focused on the producers and all of the rules that I feel like I wasn’t exactly myself,” she says. “I was always worried about getting sued because I let something slip about the show. I got wrapped up in the things that didn’t really matter.”
Though Harris ultimately split from her final choice, Ed Swiderski, she applauds last season’s Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe for the way she handled herself. “Kaitlyn did such a great job of doing what she wanted to do, even though she caught some flack for it,” she says. “It paid off in the end and she was able to attract the best person for her instead of the person that everyone else thinks she should be with.”
And as for all of those gorgeous gowns that JoJo will get to wear at the rose ceremonies? Harris says the show’s stylist, Cary Fetman, will have her back. “When you’re on The Bachelor, you don’t get any wardrobe help unless you make it to the final two,” she says. “But when you’re The Bachelorette, Cary helps find beautiful gowns for you.”
