The Weeknd is having a moment. He first broke into the mainstream mindset with his Ariana Grande “Love Me Harder” collaboration last year, and he’s only gotten bigger since. He’s performed on SNL, had multiple hits on the charts, and has also become known for his unmistakable, one-of-a-kind hairdo. So who is The Weeknd really? Scroll down to find out more about the man behind the hair.
1. His real name is Abel Tesfaye.
Tesfaye has said he didn’t like his real name, so he originally called himself The Weekend. The R&B singer ran into copyright problems with a Canadian band by the same name, so he quickly ditched his third vowel and became The Weeknd.
2. He was raised in Scarborough, Ontario.
The musician grew up in Ontario. His parents were born in Ethiopia and migrated in the '80s.
3. His music tops the charts and breaks records.
The Weeknd may be new-ish, but he's already breaking records. He is the first male to top the Hot 100, Billboard 200, and Artist 100 charts simultaneously. He is also the first artist in history to have three of his songs (“Earned It," “The Hills,” and “Can’t Feel My Face”) hold the top three spots on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart.
4. He is headlining the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Tesfaye has been chosen to be one of the headliner’s of the show, along with Selena Gomez and Rihanna. The musician follows in the footsteps of last year’s performers, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, and Taylor Swift. The show airs Tuesday, Dec. 8 on CBS.
5. He is tied for second for the most AMA nominations, behind Taylor Swift.
The American Music Award nominations came out last week, and he scored five, including Artist of the Year. The Weeknd is the second-most nominated artist, trailing T-Swift and tying with Ed Sheeran.
6. He is dating top model Bella Hadid.
The Weeknd and Hadid kept their relationship private until stepping out together during New York Fashion Week back in September.
7. He has his own squad.
Given his romantic relationship and his current It Guy status, The Weeknd rolls deep. His posse includes potential future brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joe Jonas and Gigi Hadid, and he's also been spotted hanging out with Wiz Khalifa and Kendrick Lamar.
