On last night’s Dancing with the Stars, Karina Smirnoff and Corbin Bleu performed two routines (one of which was set to TLC’s live performance of “No Scrubs”) before their dance of the night—a freestyle to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.”
Equipped with gravity boots and the King of Pop’s signature moves, the partners looked to refine their dancing via Travis Payne, the choreographer for Michael Jackson’s This Is It tour. “We were able to get the moves from the man who taught Michael Jackson himself,” said Bleu during rehearsals. The duo promised to pay homage to the legendary artist, while still incorporating a blend of classic ballroom and acrobatic moves.
When it came time to designing their outfits, Smirnoff had plenty of inspiration. The couple wore rhinestone-encrusted silver pantsuits, complete with fedoras and blue accents. “The hats, the shoes, the socks, the shiny jacket, even the tape around his fingers—people know who that represented,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com exclusively. “We wanted the audience to feel the energy of what we were trying to recreate.”
The duo earned a total of 62/60, the second highest score of the night, right behind Amber Riley and Derek Hough’s 64/60. Bill Engvall and Emma Slater were eliminated last night, leaving three couples in the ballroom.
Tune in tonight at 9/8c on ABC for part two of the finale.
