The new season of Dancing with the Stars kicked off last night, and all eyes were on (dream team!) partners Corbin Bleu and Karina Smirnoff. “This was my first contemporary dance, ever,” Smirnoff told the judges. The dance itself was beautiful, and flowed much like Smirnoff’s costume for the night. “I didn't want to take the focus away from the messages in the song and the dance—no distractions,” Smirnoff told InStyle.com exclusively. "It is a sensual song, which only required a little skin and some flowy fabric at the ends. Simplicity does speak volumes.”
The dancer added a rhinestone belt to her sheer white costume, which added a hint of sparkle to the overall airy feel Smirnoff was aiming for. The choice of color, she said, went hand-in-hand with the choreographed number. "White is a contemporary color just like the dance,” she told us.
The dancing duo earned a total score of 24 from the judges—the second highest score of the night, right behind Derek Hough and Amber Riley, who scored a 27. "I'm confused. This is Week 1?” asked judge Len Goodman of Smirnoff and Bleu. “That was full-on, it had attack, attitude, your lifts were great!" We agree, Len. We agree.
Tune in next Monday night at 8/7c on ABC for the live results show.
