Ellie Kemper is a major Hamilton fan, and with an 8-month-old son who “doesn’t sleep” at home, she’s giving these new Hamilton lullabies a shot. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star was introduced to Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Songs from Hamilton ($8; amazon.com) on Tuesday's episode of Good Morning America, and she was smitten.
“Babies don’t sleep. They cry and they don’t sleep. But they’re darling,” she joked of her son James before singing along to the new lullaby. “I think that will work. Well done. Who’s the musical genius around here?”
“My baby is young, scrappy, and hungry. He’s always hungry,” Kemper noted, drawing parallel’s between the smash hit Broadway musical's lead character, Alexander Hamilton, and her infant son. “He’s definitely a performer, because I’ll notice when he’s playing by himself he’s fine, and then the moment he sees mom or dad, drama. So much drama. Crying, acting out. He’s very active, so I do think that he knows when eyes are on him and he brings it.”
The new mom also dished on Season 3 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, revealing that she has some fun guest stars this season, including Ray Liotta. “It was so cool because, obviously, we all know Ray Liotta and I was so, sort of, frightened at first because he has quite a face,” she joked. “I wanted to be calm and not bring that exuberant, crushing energy.”
“And by day three, he has a scene where he’s holding a kitten. And I’m telling you, that kitten was like putty in his arms and I melted. He’s the kindest, gentlest soul. There’s no reason to be scared.”
