The 2018 Grammys were packed full of talent (and emotional performances), but there was a notable absence in the form of Ed Sheeran. The singer did not show up to the awards ceremony despite taking home two of the night's top honors, Best Pop Solo Performance and Pop Vocal Album, and his absence left some fans confused.
After beating out the likes of Kesha and Lady Gaga, who both gave emotional performances at the ceremony, Sheeran took to Instagram to explain himself. In a surprising twist, it seems that the Brit was sound asleep when his name was called on stage.
"Woke up to the news I won two grammys last night. Thank you !" he wrote early Monday morning alongside an adorable picture of his cat on Instagram. "This little fluff-ball is doing a bit of a celebratory dance, lots of love to everyone xx."
There's no official word yet on why Sheeran missed out on the Madison Square Garden show in the first place, but people are already voicing their opinions on his victories, even without him being present. Some fans were upset that Sheeran won over an otherwise all-female shortlist for Best Pop Solo Performance, taking home the trophy over Kesha, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, and Lady Gaga.
Sheeran now has four Grammy wins to his name, with nine additional nominations.
