With a name inspired by iconic film star Shirley Temple, Shirley MacLaine was destined for stardom.

The actress, who celebrates her 81st birthday today, has appeared in countless films and has garnered praise and several awards for her work through the years. Although MacLaine launched her successful film career in the 1950s with her debut in Alfred Hitchock's The Trouble with Harry, the former dancer and Oscar winner continues to remain relevant, with recent roles in Downton Abbey, Glee, Bernie, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
