As strange as it might sound, a black dress can be tough to pull off on the red carpet. Firstly, the entire point of the red carpet is to sartorially stand-out and bold, bright color more easily draws the flashbulbs better than a dark hue. Secondly, a black dress by now can read predictable, staid or plain boring. But then comes along an example of the perfect black dress that reminds us of how devastingly chic it can be.

Just take Dakota Johnson's stunning Dior number at the 2015 amfAR Milano Gala last night (Sept. 26). Channeling serious Audrey Hepburn vibes, Johnson's strapless silk frock was perfectly fitted through the bust with just the right touch of volume through the skirt. In a game of details and proportions (that is, the ultimate in high fashion), Johnson nailed it by going with a midi-hem. And rather than go full Hepburn (and thus, risking looking too retro), she left her hair down and tousled. Now that's a modern ladylike look we can get behind.
